The Beatles had a way of writing epic songs. And I mean epic in the literal Webster kind of way (not the hipster 'my waffle was epic' kind of way). One of those epic songs is Happy Birthday from the White Album. I have heard this song on every birthday for as many of them as I can remember, a tradition I was certain was completely special and unique to my family. As it turns out, it isn't. Last Thursday was Devendra Banhart's birthday, and his band played HIM the song during the encore at his Minneapolis show. I couldn't believe they were sharing my celebration! They did a wonderful job, and Devendra and the crowd smiled. Happy Birthday is a great song. As I recounted this experience with a fellow server at work the next night, she exclaimed, 'that's what my dad did for me!'. I should have figured by the sentimental reaction of the crowd the night before that this is not a unique tradition. Unique or not, it is definately a special tradition. For each and every person who has someone play this for them, they know it's special.
Today, I would like to share this special tradition with a friend and fellow blogger. 35 years deserves an epic song. Happy Birthday to you! I hope you are enjoying your day.
That was lovely. thanks.
