noisetrade

I recently stumbled upon the website noisetrade.com.  It has tons of free albums available for free download (you can leave a tip for the artist if you like).  From my brief perusing of the available albums, they are mostly by smaller bands and artists who are trying to get their music heard, but their are well known folks too (Civil Wars, Nada Surf, Brandi Carlisle, The Features).  A lot of the albums are to be EP's, live albums, or a sampling from a full album.  Anyway, there is a lot of free music there.  Check it out.

    I have to question your perception of what qualifies an artist well known.

    "Well known" might have been a poor choice of words. Perhaps "established" might be more accurate.
