Tonight at work I had my biggest 'Eureka!' moment to date (and it was a long time in the making). It occurred to me while listening to Pandora's Black Keys radio for the 50th time. Every time the station is on, I hear the songs 'Finally Moving' by Pretty Lights and 'You Wish' by Nightmares on Wax (seriously, Pandora, mix it up a little bit!). I always thought they were the same song, I always wonder what song it is, and I am always confused when I check the display and it says something different than I expect. I usually say to another server, 'I love this song!', and then after checking the display and listening another minute say, 'No, wait, I thought it was something else'. Thankfully, sometimes I keep it to myself. This has been driving me crazy. So, tonight I wrote down the titles, and without fail, Pandora played both songs #1 ('Finally Moving') and #2 ('You Wish'). And, EUREKA! It's not the Pandora songs #1 and #2 I am always hoping to hear, but...
Pandora Song #1
Pretty Light's song 'Finally Moving' (from the album Taking Up Your Precious Time, released October 23, 2006), samples Etta James's voice from the 1962 song 'Somethings Got a Hold of Me':
Pandora Song #2
'You Wish' by Nightmares on Wax (the album In a Space Outta Sound was released March 7, 2006):
...it's THIS song that I love and always hope to hear! ('Für Hildegard von Bingen', from the 2013 album Mala) :
DEVENDRA BANHART!? What were you thinking?! Your linear notes state that you wrote this song!
In the end, I think most credit goes to Nightmares on Wax for writing the melody. Etta James deserves plenty of credit, however, for having a kickin' voice:
Gratuitous Etta James sample, Flo Rida's 'Good Feeling':
Devandra, I love you, so let me know if you need a good lawyer. I just happen to know a great one.
