Sometimes it Snows in April
May Day is just around the corner, and there will be no May flowers for our baskets. Last week, while coming down from the breif high people were had from our week of 40 degree temperatures, people were buzzing about the big snow storm that was coming. There was the kind of ironic excitement people have when they know something is unique, and had the 'we're all in this together' kind of attitude. That attitude is gone, and it has left a bitter shadow in its place. Over the weekend, I heard my neighbor share his opinion that this the the new spring and summer, that he has lost all hope of sunshine and flowers. As the ice and snow fell from the sky yesterday, the parking attendant at our co-op glared at me. I'm not going to take it personally. Two weeks ago Dana and I joked about how silly it was that I bought one more bag of wood pellets for our pellet stove. We are no longer laughing as we have gone through two more bags. I boycotted shoveling (the first time of the season) last week, because I was convinced the springtime sun would do the job for me. Now, almost a week later, I just look like the bad neighbor, and have a cold, snowy mess in front of my house. It looks like November, and feels like it, too. Our ten day forcast has three more days of snow (grumble grumble...). While I understand no one like to hear a Minnesotan complain about the weather, and goodness knows we've had our fill of it on facebook, I just can't take it anymore. I can't take the cold, but what is worse, I can't take the low moral everywhere I go!
With that being said, I would like to offer a sad song in solidarity. The song, Sometimes it Snows in April, was written in 1986. Here is a little proof, from a fellow Minnesotan, and life does go on. Since this song was written, we have had 26 summers. Summer will come again. I promise.
I also love this song. The album, Parade (from the movie Under the Cherry Moon), by Prince, used to be in heavy rotation at my old apartment. The silver lining to this gloomy April is I have dusted off a classic CD, and it is in rotation once again.
(Prince has heavily blocked his music from youtube, so you will need to click here to hear the original song).
A cover by someone I don't know can be watched below:
