I attended the Avett Brother's concert at the Basilica Block Party two Saturday nights ago, and really enjoyed the show. I had to chuckle to myself when they played 'Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promises' while wittnessing the irony of the beautiful lyrics set to music amidst the fundraising event for the Catholic church... but I digress...
With the exception of many plastic Bud Lite bottles boucing off my toes, it was a really great concert. The Avett Brothers would perhaps be best enjoyed at a different venue, but wherever they play, they play with energy. I was captivated the entire show by the celloist, Joe Kwon. Live, the band struck me much more as a rock band than a folk band. The concert highlighted many new songs from their soon to be released album, 'The Carpenter', as well as many songs from 'I and Love and You'. Their new music sounds in pace with thier previous body of work, and was lovely to preview live. 'Emotionalism', being my first Avett Brothers' album, is my favorite, and I was of course sad not to hear more from it, but thouroughly enjoyed the show. Below is the view I had of the stage, in all it's Sun Country/Bud Light/Cities' 97 Glory. Poor Avetts.
I was unable to attend the Basilica Block party the night before, missing two bands I would have enjoyed seeing, including The Head and the Heart and Cake. I did catch Fitz and the Tantrums right before the Avett Brothers (however I have nothing more to remark about that).
We concluded our evening by drinking Wisconsin beer at a friends place while enjoying vinyl performances of Pearl Jam, Trampled by Turtles, and Beastie Boys. It was a wonderful evening, the kind that makes you grateful for babysitting grandparents.
