John Grant - Sigourney Weaver
This was an Uncut Magazine find. I tried to get a copy of this CD at B-Side in Madison, which is notable for being about 100 square and having almost everything you would ever need music wise... But the guy behind the counter had never heard of John Grant. Maybe all the cool kids know him... He seems American, but if you look at his web site it seems like he's based in Europe.
Anyway, this is the stripped down version. On the album he's got the band Midlake backing him up and it's great. This song have a fantastic descending anti-crescendo after each verse that really rocks.
It took a few listens to this album before I realized almost none if it is serious. I mean, a song about feeling like Winona Rider in that movie about vampires? There's another song where he confesses to pissing in his girlfriends coffee. Anyway, it's good stuff.

I just listened to his album, Queen of Denmark. It's super enjoyable. The song "Jesus hates faggots" is really something.
ReplyDeleteI just had my own cosmic moment. I was just downtown (this week!) and saw that Sigourney Weaver was at the Orpheum Theater. I thought about Sigourney Weaver for the first time in a long time, and wondered what she had to say at the Orpheum, and if people enjoyed themselves. I was very happy to hear her name again in this fine song.
ReplyDeleteQueen of Denmark is a great album. I think there is only one serious song on it though. He seems to have quite a sense of humor.
